Lighting the Way: Ikhwezi’s Legacy and What Comes Next
or over a decade, Ikhwezi has quietly shaped a generation of leaders, dreamers, and changemakers in Bloemfontein’s townships. Now, as we chart the road ahead, from robotics labs in Rocklands to alumni-led mentorship, we invite you to be part of the next ten years.

In 2010, a small light was lit in Mangaung. At the time, few would have imagined that this spark Ikhwezi, meaning “morning star”, would grow into a network of over 200 lives transformed, dozens of families empowered, and a township reminded that talent, brilliance, and purpose are not bound by postcode.

A Decade of Impact, Rooted in Community

"When we began this journey, our dream was simple: create opportunities for young people in Bloemfontein’s townships, opportunities that could match, or even surpass, those found in the country’s wealthier suburbs. Through academic support, mentorship, financial aid, and moral guidance, Ikhwezi became more than just a bursary trust. We became a family, one that walks with our students from Grade 8 to graduation and beyond.

Over the past ten years:

• 97% of our learners completed matric, with more than half achieving university entrance.
• We funded over 80 bursaries across high school and university.
• Dozens of alumni now work as engineers, teachers, accountants, creatives, and civil servants.
• Many have come full circle, mentoring and sponsoring the next generation.

But We Are Not Done.

As we look to the next 10 years, the road ahead is both exciting and urgent. In a world shaped by climate disruption, AI, and digital inequality, we must ask: Are our young people being prepared for what’s next? That’s why Ikhwezi’s next chapter will focus on three bold directions:

1. Future Skills in Township Schools

We are laying the foundation for a Robotics, Cybersecurity and AI Pilot Programme in Rocklands, beginning in 2026. It’s time our communities didn’t just use technology, but helped create it.

2. Growing Our Ikhwezi Family

We aim to double the number of learners supported, with more Matric camps, winter schools, and university prep initiatives. To do this, we’ll need more mentors, tutors, and donors, people like you.

3. A Storytelling Revolution

From August 2025, we’ll begin recording the voices of our alumni, parents, and students, stories of pain, progress, joy, and ambition. These voices will guide our programmes and build bridges with future funders.

Lighting the Way, Together

Ikhwezi has always belonged to the community. It is built on the resilience of parents, the courage of learners, and the belief that hope is not a luxury, it is a strategy. As we set the course for our next ten years, we invite you to walk this journey with us. Whether as a donor, a mentor, a teacher, or simply a supporter who believes in the power of education, we need your light to keep ours shining.
